Yarmouth town councillors were surprised to learn on June 28 that the new price tag for a proposed skate park has jumped from the original estimate of $250,000 to $429,000, plus HST.

A tender call for the construction phase of the project received four bids, with the town engineer recommending the lowest bid, at $247,914, from Graham Construction Ltd.

However, in addition, the contract amount for precast components from the Canadian Ramp Company is $172,000, plus HST, and the cost for engineering consulting services from ABL Environmental Consultants Ltd. is $9,650, plus HST.

There have been funds set aside for the project, although exactly how much couldn’t be determined during town council’s committee of the whole meeting.

The town is contributing at least $150,000, the Municipality of Yarmouth $15,000, SOMORE (the Society On Making Overdue Renewal Efforts) has raised $15,000 and a contribution from the province is expected.

Nova Scotia Power will be installing poles, lights and wires if electricians are supplied.

The proposed location is a lot opposite Emin’s Meat Market on Main Street.

The project will be discussed again at a future meeting.

Prior to the skate park issue, councillors spent most of the meeting discussing the budget.
