The LFA 34 Management Board has issued the following statement concerning the lobster strike that has been occurring in southwestern Nova Scotia. The strike was initiated by the 1688 Professional Lobster Fishermens Association in an effort to achieve a committed price from buyers for the remainder of the spring season, which closes on May 31.
"On April 26, 2012, a decision was made for lobster fishers in LFA 34 to tie up their boats and stop fishing, in an effort to achieve higher price for lobsters. The LFA 34 Management Board was not part of the decision to tie up the boats.
“The LFA 34 Managment Board is an elected body that represents lobster licence holders that work from various ports. The board is responsible to manage local lobster issues, including negotiating a selling price with local buyers.

“The LFA 34 Management Board believes that every licence holder has the right to decide whether to fish or not to fish. The LFA 34 Management Board does not condone violence, threats, or intimidation in any form, as it only serves to divide our communities.
“The lobster industry is an important element of the economy of Southwestern Nova Scotia, and in the current economy, it is important that we, as fishermen, continue to work towards a strong and vibrant lobster fishery that benefits everyone."
