Another meeting of a newly formed lobster association is being held Wednesday, Jan. 18.
The 1688 Professional Lobster Fishermen Association is holding a meeting at the West Pubnico Legion Hall at 1:30 p.m.
The association has been encouraging lobster fishermen, since the date of Jan. 10, not to sell their lobsters as part of an effort to see the price climb to $5.50 a pound.
As of late last week the price sat at around $4.25. Early in the season it was $3.50.
The meeting is open to all captains, crewmembers and the public.
Last week the province's fisheries minister Sterling Belliveau said he hoped that fishermen won't resort to tying up their boats. While he told the media he supports the newly formed association he said elected bodies that represent LFAs 33 and 34 and other stakeholders in the industry, including the buyers, should be consulted before any such action is taken.
Fishermen attending a meeting of the association in Yarmouth last week were told to hold their lobsters for the time being, but that a vote could take place, if they so wished, on whether fishing should be halted until the price further climbs.
