The Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association is optimistic the fall lobster season should see prices continue to increase continuing a trend begun in the last weeks of the spring fishery.

“Although provincial numbers suggest the overall catches for the spring season were down 13 to 14 per cent overall from the 2010 Spring season, internal information suggests the catch decreases were much higher in most harbours,” the association notes.

The association said the decrease was due to a number of factors including cold water temperatures, fewer fishing days due to poor weather conditions, a 1 mm carapace size increase and the unknown impacts of the severe wind storms that were experienced last winter.

While the season started out with prices in the $3.50-$3.75 range for canners, by the end of the spring fishery they ranged from $4.75 for canners and $5 for market size lobsters.
