MALPEQUE, P.E.I. – David Champion is relieved the rock crab fishery ended Tuesday and his fishing is done for another year.

But Champion, whose boat suffered $20,000 worth of damage when it struck a sand bar recently, said he was surprised Malpeque Harbour had still not been dredged. “I feel sorry for the people harvesting mussels,” said Champion. “The dredging should have been done in August.”

The mussel season will continue through to freeze-up, and then boats will be replaced with snowmobiles and four-wheelers.

Lois Drummond, manager of the Malpeque Harbour Authority, confirmed a second dredge had still not happened, even though it was slated for a week ago.

Anywhere from four to five days of good weather, with minimal winds, is needed for the dredging to move ahead. Although there have been a couple of days where weather was almost ideal, it just wasn’t enough. “They need an open window for a few days,” she said. “This weather is so crazy. It’s just kind of ridiculous, it’s unbelievable. We’re shaking our heads.”
