A.F. Theriault & Son Ltd. was recently named the winner of the national Laurier de la PME 2009 prize in the category of processing company. The Meteghan River, N.S. company received the award during a gala at the Château Laurier in Ottawa on Nov. 7.

A.F Theriault is one of the largest privately owned shipyards in the Atlantic region in terms of boatbuilding and repair. Established in 1938, the company is now on its third generation.

The Laurier de la PME 2009 prize recognizes excellence in entrepreneurship. Arthur Theriault and Gilles Theriault accepted the prize. They acknowledged the company’s founder Augustin Theriault, and thanked their wives and employees for their support and contribution to the company’s success.

The company employs 145 permanent staff. Having built its reputation on the construction of wooden boats, A.F. Theriault now uses materials like steel, aluminum, fibreglass and composites to build fishing boats, pleasure crafts, catamarans and patrol ships.

The company is also very involved in community development. It is a member of the Société acadienne de Clare as well as the Clare Chamber of Commerce and it employs a number of young interns in various trades.

Said CDÉNÉ executive director Julie Oliver, “The CDÉNÉ is very proud of A.F. Theriault for receiving this national prize. Not only does this company contribute a lot to the economy of the Acadian community of Saint Mary’s Bay, but it has also built a solid reputation for itself on the local, provincial, national and even international level. It is a very innovative business that is dedicated towards its employees. We hope this recognition will bring the company increased visibility and have a positive economic impact on their business during the coming years."

The Lauriers de la PME competition. The competition is hosted by the Réseau de développement économique et d’employabilité (RDÉE) Canada and is held every two years.
