Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter met with senior Chinese government officials and business leaders in Shanghai on Sept. 17, to support trade and investment in Nova Scotia.
The meeting was during the 11-day Council of the Federation trade mission to China.
Premier Dexter continued to promote Nova Scotia's ocean technology and ship-building sectors during meetings with the Polar Research Institute of China. The institute co-ordinates Chinese polar research with an ice breaker and research stations in the Arctic and Antarctic. Premier Dexter held an initial meeting with the Institute in Halifax in April.
"Our shared interest in the ocean represents a tremendous opportunity for Nova Scotia and China to encourage partnerships between our research communities and marine industries," said Premier Dexter, chair of the Council of the Federation. "Nova Scotia recognizes the importance of the marine industries to our economy and we have identified oceans technology as a strategic sector for future investment and development."
Nova Scotian companies are pioneers in underwater acoustics and imaging, marine communications, navigation, and a wide variety of enhanced engineering and environmental services. Nova Scotia's marine technology sector generates more than $500 million annually, double the amount it made in 2003.
